Worried About Termites? 2 Things You Can Do To Protect Your Home
Termites can cause great damage to any wooden structure, including your home. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help protect your home from these destructive insects. Below are two of these things to help you get started.
Hire a Professional
The best thing you can do is to hire a professional pest control company to provide you with termite prevention and treatment. They will inspect your property for termites and use special chemicals to kill them if any are found. They will then put a chemical barrier around your home to prevent the termites from coming back again. For example, the pest control company can put a barrier around the foundation of your home. This will prevent termites from crawling under the foundation
If the pest control company determines you have termites, they may set up baits to attract them. In many cases this is a plastic container that is buried in the soil. Bait is placed in the container, and the termites will eat the bait. They will also take bait back to their colony. Once the other termites start eating they will all die.
The pest control company can go over this information with you in detail, so you can understand how they kill and prevent termites.
Use the Right Mulch
If you like to garden and use wood mulch for your flower beds, termites will be drawn to the mulch if there are any of these insects in the area. Once they get there they will then gravitate to other wood structures in your yard. Fortunately, you can still use mulch but need to use a certain type.
Got to a garden center and ask them if they have mulch that is resistant to termites. If they do not you can purchase it online or through a landscaper in your area.
Along with the mulch lay plastic down first over the flower bed. Cut areas in the plastic for the flowers to stick through. Make the area around the flowers is about 6 to 10 inches so water can get to the roots of the flowers. Termites will not like the plastic because they like to crawl through dirt.
These two tips should help your home stay termite free. If you do notice any damage to wood, see discarded wings, and tunnels in the ground, do not wait but call a pest control company, like Quality Pest Control, immediately before the termites do extensive damage to your home.
